The images for sale in this category are the Originals of botanical cyanotypes, framed in a choice of stylish black or white wooden frames. Each image is completely unique.
Cyanotypes are made using one of the oldest photographic techniques (developed by Sir John Herschel in 1842), whereby a paper is coated with UV-light sensitive chemicals, an object is placed on top (usually covered by glass) and the paper is exposed to sunlight, leaving a negative image of the object. No camera is involved in their creation. During exposure and subsequent fixing in a waterbath, the chemicals turn from a yellowish-green to the characteristic prussian blue-cyan colour, giving the process its name. For most of my cyanotypes I use an alternative technique called wet cyanotype first developed by Krista McCurdy whereby the paper is wetted again before exposure and can be exposed for a lot longer which allows a greater variety of colours and textures to develop.
